Researchers from the Biosciences Institute at Botucatu, Brazil, has found that banana peel can be used to pull heavy metals that contaminate the water. "Not only that. Its performance was better than other techniques," said Gustavo Castro, researchers from the Biosciences Institute.
Castro and his colleagues dry banana peels. Then they mix the banana skin with water. The result, as described by Castro, clean water from the metal. "Metal stick to the banana peel," said Castro. He also added that the ability to draw a banana skin material than other metals.
Metal contamination in water is usually parsed using silica, cellulose, and aluminum oxide. Water cleaning is expensive and have side effects.
Although Castro has proved the ability of a banana skin, he has not suggested to purify water at home. Tap water usually contains no metal. Moreover, the layman may not be able to measure the levels of metals in water. The research results are published in the journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research is intended for the industry.
Rather than thrown away and just be a waste, banana peels can be used to purify water. In addition to cheap and readily available, more potent than a banana peel the other as a natural filter to absorb heavy metals.
Do not need any modification, banana skin that will be used to purify water need only chopped into small pieces and then put in the water. By itself of heavy metals such as lead and copper will be absorbed by the fibers found in banana skin.
Quoted from ScienceDaily, Friday (11/03/2011), heavy metals are pollutants that are harmful to the environment and health. In the human body, these pollutants can accumulate and lead to negative impacts in the long run or even be passed on to the next generation.
Lead (Pb), for example, can inhibit the synthesis of hemoglobin or red blood substances that interfere with nerve function and other organs. In children, lead can inhibit the growth of brain cells and lower levels of intelligence while growing up.
Meanwhile, other heavy metals, namely copper (Cu) if it accumulates in the human body can lead to hardening of the liver (cirrhosis) and kidney damage. Copper can also accumulate in the nerve tissue and corneas, thus damaging the function of vision.
To purify drinking water from heavy metals, the technology currently available are generally very expensive and less accessible to the general public. While the natural filters that have been studied and shown to be effective include waste coconut husk and peanut shells.
In addition to cheap and readily available, another advantage of the banana peel can be used multiple times. In a study published in the journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research recently, chopped banana peels can be used as much as 11 times.
